This
is the stock Carvin Bolt kit; the only option I chose was the
tortoiseshell pickup cover. If you ever want a starting point for
guitar-building, this is it. You're basically assembling their
Bolt model using their precision-machined parts. Aside from the
finish, you could put it together in a couple hours.
The
finish is a hand-rubbed burst using ColorTone vintage amber, orange,
and red mahogany. It's a "sunrise burst" instead of a standard
sunburst, to highlight the eagle I woodburned near the bridge.
The headstock logo was printed using a calligraphic pen and black
ink. Over this went 6 coats of tung oil; the body and front of
the headstock got an additional 3 coats of wipe-on polyurethane.
This
is basically a Stratocaster and then some. I like the
less-rounded bridge and fretboard radius, and their switching scheme
gives you the two pickup combinations that are missing with a standard
5-position pickup selector. Other than that, it has all the
sounds and feel you expect in a Strat. Given to the very talented Hannah Garcia.
